The Aloe plant is a part of the lily family (onions, leeks, garlic, tulips, turnips andasparagus) but it is Aloe Barbadensis which is commonly called ALOE VERA.

It is the most efficacious natural plant of our times used both externally and internally and there are numerous benefits that are derived from this wonderful plant. The health benefits of Aloe Vera have been propagated throughout the world and there are but very few places where it has not made a dent.

Aloe vera is a perennial plant which grows wild in eastern and southern Africa. It is cultivated in the West Indies and has been found in the Zapata area of Texas. The plant has a thick fibrous root which produces large basal leaves. The leaves are one to two feet long, two to three feet wide, gradually tapering to a point. They are whitish green on both sides and bear spiny teeth on the margins. Red, yellow, purple, or pale striped flowers are present most of the year, growing in a long raceme at the top of the flower stalk which originates from the center of the basal leaves. The flower stalk can grow up to four and a half feet in height. The fruit is a triangular capsule containing numerous seeds. The medicinal part is the leaves.

Aloe-Vera is a nutritional storehouse, containing vitamins B1, B2, B6, C,niacinamide, choline and 18 amino acids, in addition to many other nutritional substances. Aloe-Vera juice is an ingredient in many commercial topical creams, lotions and shampoos. Hundreds of scientific papers describe activities of Aloe Vera taken internally or applied externally to skin and hair.

There are several variations of the aloe plant, but only one variety has a legendary medicinal reputation dating back thousands of years: the Aloe Vera. Vera, which means true in Latin, was added to the appellation of this particular specimen in order to distinguish its primacy among the aloe plants.

Aloe vera is considered by many to be a member of the cactus family. In reality, it is a member of the lily family. There are over 200 species of the aloe plant, but only one true Aloe Vera. Only the authentic Aloe Vera provides the potent therapeutic effects which nature has built in it.

It is only recently that Aloe Vera has been “re-discovered” and has come back into general use. Ironically enough, it was the invention of the X-ray and the atom bomb which again focused attention upon the plant. It was found early in the search for protection against radiation burns that the best treatment was Aloe Vera gel. As chemical, medical and physical scientific research as progressed, many old remedies have been found to be worthless because they were based upon faulty information and reasoning. Some, however, have been discovered to be infinitely superior to many synthetics.

Aloe Vera is one of the old natural remedies that have come into their own in the Space Age as one of the modern “miracle” drugs.
